Comb Outs for Tangled Hair: What Parents Need to Know

Tangled hair got you and your little one in a knot? You’re not alone. Tangles can be a daily challenge, especially for kids with long, fine, curly, or textured hair. Whether it’s from sleep, play, or just day-to-day wear, tangles happen. The good news? We are here to help!

What to Expect from a Professional Comb-Out at Beaners

  • Gentle, patient brushing. Our stylists are trained to handle tangles with care.
  • Breaks when needed. We pause as often as necessary to give your child time to relax and stay comfortable.
  • Professional detangling products. We use high-quality products and tools designed to make the process easier and more comfortable for your child.
  • Proper technique. Hair is brushed starting from the bottom and working up to prevent pulling and breakage.
  • Clear communication about costs. In cases where extra time is needed for significant tangles or matting, there may be an additional charge. Our staff will always discuss this with you before the comb-out begins.

Booking Tips for Comb-Out Services

If you suspect a comb-out will be needed, please let us know when booking your appointment. You can do this by:

  • Calling the salon directly, or
  • Adding a note in the comments when booking online.

This helps our team plan enough time to complete the service without feeling rushed and ensures we stay on schedule for all clients.

The best time to book a comb-out is typically Monday through Thursday between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM, when the salon is quieter and your child can have more one-on-one attention.

If no notice is given, we’ll still do our best to accommodate you—but wait times may be longer depending on how busy the salon is.

Note: Comb-outs that take longer than 5 minutes may have an extra cost. Prices vary by location, so it’s best to call your local Beaners Fun Cuts to confirm.

DIY Detangling Tips for Parents

Prefer to tackle tangles at home? Here are our top tips to make the process smoother (and less stressful!):

  • Dampen the hair. Wet or lightly sprayed hair is more elastic and less prone to breakage during brushing.
  • Work in small sections. Use sectioning clips to divide the hair. Smaller sections make tangles easier to manage.
  • Use the right products. Cream-based or spray detanglers help brushes glide through hair. Our favorites are listed below!
  • Start from the bottom. Always begin brushing from the ends and work your way up toward the roots.
  • For big mats: Use a detangling comb or the tip of a comb to gently pick apart the knot. Then, follow up with a detangling brush from the bottom upwards.
  • Wash afterward. Once hair is tangle-free, shampoo and condition to remove any buildup from sweat, oils, or detangling products—a common cause of tangles.

Prevention is Key: How to Avoid Tangles

  • Protect hair at night. Try loose braids or a silk pillowcase to reduce overnight tangling.
  • Regular trims. Split ends make tangling worse. Frequent trims help keep hair healthy and more manageable.
  • Daily brushing. A quick brush in the morning and evening prevents knots from forming.
  • Condition regularly. Well-moisturized hair is less likely to tangle.
